Harmony Chidi and Nigeria’s Flamingos have arrived in Morocco as preparations move into the host country for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the team’s arrival on Wednesday, publishing an image of the contingent at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca.

The federation said the players “have arrived in the Kingdom of Morocco”. The announcement is a travel milestone rather than a match result, but it brings the squad closer to its opening group assignment against Poland on 17 October.

Chidi captains a 21-player squad named by the federation earlier in the week. Nigeria’s other group opponents are Puerto Rico and Korea DPR, with those matches scheduled for 20 and 23 October respectively. The immediate emphasis is preparation for the opening match rather than projecting a knockout-round route before the group has begun.

For Nigerian supporters, the important distinction is between the squad announcement and the team now settling into tournament surroundings. Arrival confirms that this stage of the journey has been completed; it does not confirm a starting line-up, player fitness assessment or a particular tactical system.

The opening fixture will give the first competitive indication of how the selected group fits together. Until then, expectations should be attached to confirmed information: the captain, the announced squad and the group programme. Players at this age should not be burdened with invented form statistics or comparisons that the available evidence cannot support.

Women’s football deserves attention before the score arrives. Following the Flamingos’ preparation also gives supporters a chance to learn the names in the squad, rather than discovering them only if Nigeria advance.
