Rivers United and Rangers drew 1–1 on Sunday, leaving four clubs on 18 points at the top of the NPFL table. Bendel Insurance and Kano Pillars are alongside them, but the number of matches played makes the picture more complicated than a four-way tie suggests.
The league’s table, checked on Monday, lists Rivers first with 18 points from 11 games and Rangers second with 18 from nine. Bendel Insurance have played ten and Kano Pillars 11. Nasarawa United follow on 17 points from 11. These are the published positions, rather than a prediction of how outstanding matches will finish.
Rivers coach Finidi George pointed to finishing after the draw. ‘If we didn’t create chances, I would be worried,’ he said in post-match comments reported by Sports Beat. Creating opportunities and converting them are different tasks; another draw leaves Rivers with work to do even while they remain first.
Elsewhere, Shooting Stars beat Abia Warriors 4–1, Bendel Insurance won 2–1 at Kwara United and Kano Pillars defeated Nasarawa United 2–0. Enyimba beat Kun Khalifat 1–0, Katsina United overcame Sporting Lagos 2–1, Plateau United drew 1–1 with Warri Wolves and Inter Lagos finished 1–1 against Ranchers Bees. Doma United and Ikorodu City drew 2–2, while Niger Tornadoes and Barau finished goalless.
For supporters following the title race, the useful comparison is points alongside games played, not position alone. Rangers have more fixtures to complete than the clubs around them, but an unplayed match is an opportunity rather than three points already banked. Rivers still hold the listed lead and must turn future opportunities into results.
The round therefore leaves a crowded race rather than a clear favourite. Which club has the strongest position now: the side already at the top or the challenger with games still to play?
