Edo Queens have missed out on the CAF Women’s Champions League place after Ampem Darkoa Ladies won the resumed WAFU Zone B qualifying final 3–2 overall in Egypt on Thursday. The Ghana Football Association confirms the result and the Ghanaian club’s qualification in its latest official release.
For Nigerian supporters, the important number is the completed score rather than the result of the original penalty shootout. The GFA explains that the earlier contest had finished level before Edo prevailed on penalties, after which Ampem Darkoa successfully appealed and the match was ordered to resume from extra time.
The continuation therefore settled an unfinished contest; it was not a new full match starting from a blank scoreline. MyJoyOnline reports that Ampem Darkoa scored during the additional period. The Ghanaian side’s advantage in that continuation changed the overall result and decided which club would progress to the continental competition.
In the GFA release, Ampem Darkoa president Nana Opoku Fosu Gyeabour II said: “We hope to represent our country very well.” The comment looks ahead to Ghana’s participation. For Edo, the immediate consequence is that the continental campaign anticipated after the original shootout will not follow from this qualifying tie.
The procedural history should not obscure the football outcome. An appeal changed how the final had to be completed, and the additional play then produced a winner. Those are separate parts of the story. Neither the earlier celebration nor an isolated extra-time score gives readers the full final position on its own.
Edo’s next task is to respond to the disappointment without allowing one qualifying defeat to define the whole team. For Nigerian women’s club football, what would make the strongest response: better match management, stronger squad depth or a more consistent domestic programme?
