UEFA confirms Sunderland beat AZ Alkmaar 1–0 on the opening night of the 2026/27 Europa League league phase.
The win carried extra weight because it marked Sunderland’s return to European competition after 53 years.
Big occasions can become chaotic, but a one-goal European win depends on managing the periods when the crowd wants constant attack. Sunderland protected the margin and converted emotion into a result.
The next question is repeatability: can the same balance survive away from home when the atmosphere and game state are less favourable?
