UEFA's confirmed schedule places Sunderland against AZ Alkmaar tonight at 8:00pm WAT in the Europa League league phase.
The occasion will generate energy. Sunderland's challenge is to turn that emotion into controlled pressure without leaving the wide spaces unprotected when attacks break down.
AZ bring continental experience and should be comfortable if the match becomes impatient. Sunderland must decide when to accelerate and when to keep the ball rather than trying to win every moment at maximum speed.
The fixture is confirmed; the tactical questions are original analysis and do not assume an unannounced team selection.
