Nigeria’s third group of referees and assistant referees is scheduled for fitness testing on Tuesday 25 August, according to the NFF’s published pre-season workshop programme. The same group completed medical checks on Monday, with classroom work, practical sessions and tests scheduled for Wednesday and Friday.
The fitness test matters because an official who cannot repeatedly reach the correct viewing angle will struggle to judge contact, offside movement and transitions. But physical capacity is only one layer: positioning, communication and consistency still determine whether good running becomes good decision-making.
For NPFL supporters, the useful early-season test is not whether referees look fast in isolation. Watch whether they stay close without obstructing play, whether assistant referees hold a reliable line, and whether similar challenges receive similar decisions across both halves.
PitchNaija will treat the workshop as preparation, not proof that every officiating problem has been solved. The fairest assessment begins when competitive matches provide repeatable evidence.
