Football's 2026/27 Restart Rules: Five Seconds That Could Change Match Flow

IFAB's 2026/27 Laws add a visual five-second countdown when a team is unfairly delaying a throw-in or goal kick. An expired throw-in countdown gives possession to the opponents; an expired goal-kick countdown produces a corner.

The substitution protocol also requires a player to leave by the nearest point within ten seconds of the referee's signal, unless the referee allows otherwise.
